Salvage Prophet vs Motorcheck: what's actually different?
Motorcheck runs £9.99 to £3.99 a report, and every tier covers finance and stolen checks unlike rivals. What that means, and what our checker gives free first.

The short answer
Motorcheck is a UK vehicle-check provider priced at £9.99 for a single report, down to £4.99 each in a three-pack (£14.99) or £3.99 each in a five-pack (£19.99). Unlike every other provider in this comparison series, Motorcheck does not gate its coverage by tier: every price point on its pricing page carries the same feature list. Our free Vehicle History Checker gives you the official DVSA MOT history, mileage timeline and any Copart UK auction record we hold, at no cost, before you spend anything. If the free check leaves a gap, our own Full HPI Report at /hpi-check now covers the same write-off, finance and stolen-marker data Motorcheck charges for at every tier.
What Motorcheck's tiers actually cover, and the one real difference from its rivals
Motorcheck's own pricing page lists an identical coverage list on the £9.99 single check, the £14.99 three-pack and the £19.99 five-pack: full vehicle identity, finance check, mileage check, write-off check, scrapped check, stolen vehicle check, at-risk check, taxi check, keeper/plate/colour change history, MOT history, tax status, manufacturer recalls, a valuation and running costs. That is a genuinely different shape to the RAC, the AA, GOV.UK and Total Car Check, all of which hold back finance or another key field until you pay for a higher tier. With Motorcheck the only thing that changes as you spend more is the price per check, not what any single check contains.
Why Motorcheck is worth knowing about, and what it isn't
Motorcheck is not a household name the way the RAC or the AA is, and it has no roadside-assistance or insurance business behind it, the check itself is the whole business. It carries real, mixed customer reviews on Trustpilot, some praising fast, accurate reports, others noting a 'clear' result does not guarantee a clean history, which is true of every provider in this space and not specific to Motorcheck. It shows up repeatedly and independently across UK car-buying comparison roundups as a genuine, established option, not an invented or obscure one. Like every other paid provider here, the underlying write-off, finance and stolen-vehicle registers are shared industry-wide, not a database exclusive to any one brand.

What our free checker covers without paying any tier
We read directly from the DVSA MOT history API, so the full MOT and mileage timeline, every test, advisory and odometer reading, is free and instant with nothing to buy first. Add the VIN and we also check it against our own salvage auction records. For a straightforward UK-only car, the everyday questions, is the mileage consistent, is the MOT current, has it failed on anything serious, are answered by our free tools alone.
Where you now have a direct alternative to Motorcheck's report
Confirmed insurance write-off category, outstanding finance and stolen markers sit in registers only licensed commercial providers can query. Motorcheck is one; we are now one too. Our Full HPI Report, 5 credits per lookup with no subscription needed, pulls that same write-off, finance and stolen-marker data on top of the free MOT and mileage picture, in one report, on the same site you already ran the free check on.
The practical order to do it in
Run our free MOT, mileage and status check first, it costs nothing and takes seconds. If the car's paper trail is clean and it has stayed in the UK its whole life, that is often enough to bid with confidence. If real money is on the line, run our Full HPI Report for the confirmed write-off, finance and stolen data, or Motorcheck's report if you specifically want its multi-pack pricing for checking several cars at once, knowing every tier covers the same fields either way.
