Electrical faults do not photograph as obviously as a dented panel, and our model prices this category cautiously by default. How to spot the warning signs.

Why electrical damage is the hardest to price from photos

A crushed panel is obvious in a thumbnail. A chafed wiring loom, a corroded connector or a dead module is not, it can sit behind an intact bumper and never show up in a single auction photo. That is exactly why our own repair model treats an unconfirmed car more cautiously by default: if a lot is not confirmed Run and Drive, the model assumes at least a moderate mechanical and electrical risk rather than assuming the best case, because the alternative, assuming a silent car is fine, is how beginners get caught out.

Read the Run and Drive status first

This is the single strongest electrical signal a listing gives you. Run and Drive with keys present means the car's electrical system, at minimum, starts the engine and holds a charge, a real, tested signal, not a guess. A non-runner or an unconfirmed status means treat electrical risk as a live possibility, not a footnote, until you have priced a worst case.

What to actually look for in the photos

Dashboard shots are the best source: a lit warning light, a blank instrument cluster, or a dash covered in fault icons in a start-up photo is a direct tell. In engine bay shots, look for a wiring loom that has been pulled, melted, or shows bare copper, and for connectors with green or white corrosion on the pins, both common after a flood or a fire that did not fully total the car. A battery that has been removed or a battery tray that looks disturbed is also worth a second look, since it often means someone has already been in there chasing a fault.

The overlap with flood and fire damage

Electrical faults are rarely random, they are usually a symptom of something else on the damage tag. Flood damage is the biggest cause, water in a modern car's connectors and control units causes electrical gremlins that can take months to fully surface, which is exactly why our model treats salt-water flood as its own capped-grade risk, the same way it caps severe structural damage. A fire-damaged lot carries the same logic even when the fire was contained, heat degrades wiring insulation well beyond the visibly scorched area.

Budgeting for the unknown

A confirmed single fault, a known dead battery or a blown fuse, is cheap and worth pricing exactly. An unconfirmed non-runner is not: it could be a five-minute fix or a full loom replacement, and photos alone cannot tell you which. Do not average the two possibilities in your head and hope, price the pessimistic case and let a good result be a bonus rather than the expectation. Paste the lot into the Analyzer so the mechanical and electrical risk gets priced consistently from the Run and Drive status and damage tags, rather than talked down because the panels looked clean.
