MOT history: the free goldmine most buyers ignore
The free government MOT history record tells you more about a used car than the seller ever will. How to read it like a mechanic.

It is free and most people skip it
Every MOT a UK car has taken is public and free at gov.uk, and now inside our Vehicle History Checker. It is the single best free source on a car, yet most buyers never look. Ten minutes reading it can save you thousands.
Check the mileage timeline
Each MOT records the odometer reading. Plot them in your head or let the tool draw the graph. The mileage should only ever go up, and at a believable rate. A reading that drops, or a sudden slowdown after years of high miles, points to clocking. This is the number one thing to check.
Read the advisories, not just pass or fail
Advisories are the tester flagging things that are wearing but not yet failures: corrosion, oil leaks, worn bushes, tyres near the limit. A car with the same advisory year after year has an unfixed problem. A long list of fresh advisories on an older car tells you what is coming.

Look for the failure pattern
Repeated failures for the same reason, or a cluster of failures then a sudden clean sheet from a different test centre, are worth questioning. Gaps where the car was untested for a year or more can hint at time off the road after damage.
Cross-check with the seller's story
If the seller says one owner, full history and low use, the MOT record should back that up: steady mileage, consistent test centres, few advisories. When the paperwork and the MOT record disagree, believe the MOT record. Run the reg through our checker and you get the whole timeline in one screen.
